Backlighting Options

Technigraphics offers a variety of membrane switch backlighting options. Whether utilizing LED’s, fiber optic lamps, or electroluminescent lamps (EL lamps), we can advise you how to achieve the most cost-effective solution for your membrane switch design.

1. LED’s  

Primarily used as indicator lights, embedded LED’s are a popular, low-cost, point source lighting method in Silver Flex membrane switches, PCB membrane switches, and Copper Flex membrane switches. Embedded LED’s emit very little heat, and come in a variety of colors, lamp packages and intensity levels. Surface mount LEDs can be bonded into our polyester switch constructions, which provide a reliable, cost effective light source. An even greater variety of lamp packages can be used in PCB Membrane Switches and Copper Flex Membrane Switches, and can be through-hole soldered.

      LED’s offer:

  • Low cost
  • Efficient low power consumption
  • Single or bi-color, plus blue and white
  • Available in a wide variety of sizes, colors, and intensities

2. Fiber Optic

Fiber optic lamps are a cost-effective method to achieve more uniform backlighting across a broader area of the membrane switch keypad. With fiber optic backlighting, light from a light source, normally an LED, is evenly distributed under the graphics by use of very thin plastic fibers.

     Some advantages of fiber optic backlighting are:

  • Low power consumption – fiber optic lamps can often be adequately lit by one LED
  • Long life (100,000+ hours in most configurations)
  • Humidity resistant
  • Replaceable
  • Thin (as thin as .013”)
  • No complex electrical drivers/inverters
  • Heat/EMI free – adds no heat or EMI to interfere with the membrane switch operation

3. EL Lighting

Also known as Electroluminescent Lighting, these lamps contain phosphors, which convert electrical energy directly into light energy. The high efficiency of this conversion minimizes power consumption and losses due to heat or IR emissions. EL backlighting devices consequently consume relatively little power under normal operation. They are best suited for low and no light applications where the backlight is not always on, because the phosphors tend to decay with extended use at high voltages and frequencies.

     Characteristics of EL lighting are:

  • Thin design - .0085” - .0115” does not inhibit tactile feedback
  • Low power consumption
  • Requires the use of a DC/AC inverter to power the lamp
  • Useful life can vary from 1000 – 20000 hours
